Racism is alive and well in the good ole USA.
Last night Washington Capitals forward, Joel Ward, scored the winning goal in overtime of game 7 thus eliminating last seasons Stanley Cup Champions, the Boston Bruins, from further play.
Within minutes of the game’s end a lot of Bruin fans took to Twitter and posted a series of racial slurs against Ward, a black man, by using the “N” word.
Their inflammatory remarks, some of which are tied to a name and face, are shown below. Is this not a hate crime? This is a personal public attack on an individual solely on his race. While I am not one for censorship, I do believe that these people should be held accountable for their actions.
I used to think that racism was more of an older phenomena from days gone that would just as soon be forgotten. But by looking at the avatar with these Twitter accounts a lot of these people look very young. This is most disturbing. Since racism is a learned behavior it seems that there is a lot of work to do for us as a species and society.
