As the ole saying goes: ‘Stupid is as stupid does’ and tonight a few million people around the world will turn off their power in some sort of media-induced-lame-assed-feel-good attempt at thinking they are doing something good for the planet.
What a load of crap.

Let’s think about this for a second. There are about 33 million Canadians, 330 million Americans. As of July 2007 there are 1,321,851,888 Chinese and 1,129,866,154 Indians (who counted?). If western civilization was really interested in doing something good for the planet then they would be coming up with economically viable ‘green’ energy sources for these populations as they strive to catch up with us. You see, to them, we are the green grass on the other side of the hill and they want to be like us.
They all want cars and toys and they will pump out more pollution per month than we do in 5 years. Our ‘euerka’ lights have been out for years because we have had it too good for too long and now the rest of the world wants in on our action.
Humans are being very hypocritical when they participate in something like this. For all of the recycling and conservation that North America is doing, it amounts to diddly squat at helping the environment. The Western world needs to get off of its collective asses and invest its brainpower toward creating new ways to mass-produce horsepower.
This whole earth day thing raises awareness alright. Awareness of just how gullible humans are and how they jump on any bandwagon being sold by the media to give them a false sense of ‘feeling good’ .
Think about that the next time you are in the lineup at the drive-thru in your Lincoln Navigator.

1You have a very good point! While doing your part and turning off your lights for a night does help safe some energy. It is still the same as putting your finger in the hole in the dam, it will not work until the flood of new energy consumption has a new outlet to plug into.

2Okay dude, I see where you’re coming from, but here’s the thing – I don’t think the hour of not using electricity was designed to save the planet or reverse the damage done by years and years of mass pollution – maybe it was just designed to make us collectively think about how wasteful we are with things like electricity.. I’m completely in agreement with you though about the need to do something bigger, something that involves collectively squashing the profits of greedy oil companies and manufacturers of SUV’s – the bastards..

3“something that involves collectively squashing the profits of greedy oil companies and manufacturers of SUV’s – the bastards..”
Greedy oil companies? Since when is it evil to make a profit? While we are at it, why don’t we close down First Solar (stock ticker FSLR) and Apple (APPL)? They make huge profits—actually they make even greater profits in terms of percentage of their respective companies. Also, why is it we are so quick to blame the oil company for high prices when the federal tax on a gallon of gasoline is six times that of the actual profit oil companies make per gallon?
Realize that oil prices are getting higher because the federal government is over spending (and printing more money) and increasing the national debt and therefore weakening the dollar (lowering the fed rate is helping either). Combine that with globalization and competing economies such as china and india needing the same oil we crave.
—–side note——–
Also–why is the federal reserve lowering rates you might ask? Because the market is falling on sub-prime mortgage woes. Why did the sub-prime markey collapse? Because the Federal government forced lenders to make loans to borrowers who had no ability to make payments through the community re-investment act (go ahead, look it up). So next time you wan’t to blame wall street or the big investment banks for risky business and irresponsible practices–remember it was the federal government that forced their hand.
——————————–
Not to mention the oil companies spend mass amounts in refining, delivering, and creatiing safe methods of delivery so we can pump our own gass without killing ourselves. Oil companies only make about 5 cents profit per $3.50 gallon gas, or 2 dollars per $112 barrel of oil. That is a net profit margin of less than 3%. They say “record profits.” Certain companies in every other industry are reaching record profits too–its called an expanding economy. If that doesnt happen, it means we all lose money and quality of life.
Don’t get me wrong–I think we should work to stop pollution. But the bottom line is people won’t do it out of the goodness of their heart (not on a large scale anyway). It will be done out of necessity and free market solutions. When gasoline is 8 bucks a gallon, we wont need the government to force automakers to make more efficient cars. They will meet the public’s demand for them. Right now the best selling car in the country is the ford F-150 pickup (over the accord, civic, carolla, and camry).
When gas gets so expensive that other sources of energy become economically viable, oil will also be phased out. Ethanol from sugar cane works for countries like Brazil because their climate allows it and its a highly efficient process. Unfortunately, ethanol from corn is not going to be viable for the long term because it takes a large amount of oil just to make ethanol. All the government is doing is filling the pockets of farmers and increasing the price of corn and grain (because people stopped growing grain for corn) to make ethanol, which really gives us a net gain of zero in terms of energy, and higher bushel prices in the corn and wheat industry will lead to high cattle prices, then dairy, and so on, and so on.
In my personal opinion, the best solutions to an energy crisis is nuclear power (there is enough to last for all human existence). It is in enough abundance that it could replace all energy needs–we can even create reactors for the production of hydrogen fuel cells for motor vehichles. Nuclear waste? Yes its a problem. But I would rather deal with some stored nuclear waste and clean burning hydrogen then the problems fossil fuels bring. This would make oil a thing of the past and our dealings in the middle east unneccessary. I would like to think we are there for more lofty goals other than oil, but you dont see 200,000 troops in Darfur.

while you clean the shit for other people, they keep making the earth worst
why should we pay for it but not the root of the causes ?

11The “Earth” will be just fine even if the humans bugle everything up and destroy every ecological system. In another million years it will be like humans never existed – the Earth will develop whole new etiologies and lifeforms.
Naming this day “Earth Day” is the height of human arrogance. Short of reducing this planet to its constituent atoms – humans can’t do much to effect the “Earth”. Humans are a tiny speck on earth’s geological timescale.
The best thing you can do to save ecological systems is kill yourself.
You go first!
